Corporate Social Responsibility

Safety Comes First in Everything We Do

Above all else, we are committed to the safety and well-being of our employees, contractors and the general public. Our employees are our most valuable resource and we will not compromise that at any time. We provide the training and tools necessary to get the job done safely.

We operate under a comprehensive Health and Safety Management System. This program works toward eliminating occupational illness and injury for all employees. We are also governed by the 18001 Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series (OHSAS) international standard.

We have an extensive accident prevention system in place where all employees have opportunities to contribute to the prevention of accidents. Monthly safety meetings, training sessions and employee suggestion forums are ways we share knowledge about workplace dangers and help keep each other safe and healthy.

We Encourage and Support Volunteerism

We encourage and support efforts to volunteer in our communities. Our employees use their talents and skills to operate cohesively as a team, and go above and beyond as individuals to make a personal difference in the communities in which we live and work.

We Are Committed to Making A Difference in Cancer Care

Our corporate charity, Power of Life, is a successful fundraising program that supports the purchase of much needed cancer treatment equipment, support programs and promotes cancer screening and awareness initiatives in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Our employees and retirees are committed to organizing and participating in annual fundraising activities. This, coupled with an annual corporate donation and monthly donations from our employees and customers, continues to benefit cancer patients and their families. We are proud to work closely with the Cancer Care Foundation Newfoundland & Labrador and cancer centres across the island to identify and address area specific needs.

We Care About Our Environment

We incorporate environmental issues into our everyday decision making. Our goal is to meet present needs without compromising future generations. When it comes to the environment, we have three primary goals in mind: preventing pollution associated with operating the electricity system, meeting or exceeding legal requirements and consistently working toward continual improvement.

A large part of our Environmental Commitment Program is EnviroFest, our annual family-oriented celebration which provides participants with an opportunity to learn more about the environment and how to preserve it. Each year during Environment Week, we host events across the province, attended by thousands of people and hundreds of community groups and organizations.

We are also passionate about educating the public on how to be more energy efficient; in order to reduce the environmental footprint associated with operating our electricity system.

We Have An Active Employees' Association

Our Employees’ Association encourages friendly networking between employees through social events, recreational sports and a variety of other functions. Our members participate in community service activities throughout the province. We have 11 Area Associations within the Company, each of which organizes social and recreational events for its members.

While social activities are very much a part of the Association, it also considers financial assistance for education as one of its important functions. Each year, scholarships are awarded to the sons, daughters and other family members of Association members.
